{eternally chic: the classic trench coat}

One of my favourite things about Spring is running out the door in a light trench -- whether paired with a favourite pair of jeans or a cocktail dress, it is one item that always makes me feel hopelessly stylish and effortlessly put together . . .

{top: françoise hardy; above: kate moss}

In 1879, a young former draper's assistant,
Thomas Burberry, invented gabardine, a comfortable yet durable tightly-woven, water-resistant fabric. This fabric was a stunning success, with orders flooding in, and the first major client being the British Army.

Using his own designs for officers' coats made 13 years earlier for the War Office, Burberry added shoulder straps and metal rings to his gabardine coat, and the trench coat was created. Today the Burberry trench coat remains one of fashion's most coveted pieces.

Lightweight, weather resistant and eternally chic, the classic trench is as stylish today as it was when Audrey Hepburn wore one in Breakfast At Tiffany's.

{cotton A.P.C. trench paired with paul smith striped shirt and just cavalli wide-legged jeans from harrods for an elegantly cool british look}

{a gryphon trench paired with acne skinnies and a proenza schouler striped tee for a perfect parisian vibe}

What a gorgeous gorgeous post! LOVE trenchcoats, must have at least 10 in my wardrobe (most of them Burberry too!), and now that it's Autumn here Down Under I plan on making full use of them all, the photos above are great for inspiration! :)

I bought a black Burberry trench about 5 years ago and have absolutly worn it to death...it's my go-to coat, probably too much...but boy does it hold it's own. Should maybe move away from the black for a change! Burberry coats are worth every penny, they last forever.

Thank you for sharing the interesting history of one of my all-time favorite fashion staples! How interesting.

PS-I, too, love that last ensemble...in fact, it's already been carefully torn out of my Vogue and filed away for safe keeping. :)

Those are entirely fabulous. Mmhm. I don't own a trench, just multiple winter clothes. Perhaps I should start looking into finding one that I can invest in. Indeed!

Oooh! I love my trench coats too! I have a Theory navy , knee length trench which is so beautiful paired with a cocktail dress and heels. And thanks for the history lesson! I now can have a little backstory to my Burberry trench- which you're so right, it's so perfect with anything.

Hello Katie! Lovely to hear from you, and can appreciate your search for a striped t for less -- please use my suggestions as inspiration, and not necessarily as a shopping list :)

Will look out for a striped t to help you in your search -- imagine the gap, or topshop, etc. may have something?

Have a lovely weekend!

I love the trench coat. Unfortunately, I have to admire from afar...living in AZ gives me maybe 2 or 3 days a year that I could even wear one. But lovely, nonetheless.

what trench do you adore? have you found on "fitted" enough? I'm quite petite and typically have a great deal of trouble finding one fitted enough to be flattering.

Hello Franki,

Here are just a few suggestions:

If you’re looking for a fantastic investment piece, a Burberry trench Burberry trench is the absolute best, and there are shorter styles that are perfect for a petite frame.

Gryphon and A.P.C. also have a lovely selection, and have heard the same for Banana Republic and TopShop for less.

Hope that helps and have a great week,
xo
