{style inspiration | backstage beauty : make up at gucci fall 2014}

Spotted earlier last week at Milan Fashion Week was a look that charmed, seduced and oozed feminine allure. A simplistic pared-down look of pale lips, strong brows, winged liner and defined lashes were seen at Gucci’s Fall 2014 collection.

Offsetting the modern sixties vibe, make up artist Pat McGrath and hairstylist Luigi Murenu constructed a look that required minimal effort that can easily be recreated. Elegantly clipped hair and soft make up strolled down the catwalk, proving that flawless make up can stand the test of time, whether it be a look, trend or season.

THIS STUNNING 18-CENTURY riad, or courtyard house, in the fishing town of Essaouira, Morroco, was an impulse buy and renovation project for New York art dealer, Dorothea McKenna Elkon, nearly twelve years ago.

Elkin_Morroco_6

With the help of designer Salem Grassi, (who would later become her husband), a crumbling ruin was transformed into a majestic concoction of warm colours, carved stone walls and printed tiles. The designer explored mosques and palaces in Morocco and Spain, in search of accomplished painters, tile setters, and wood- and stone-carvers on those journeys . . .

Elkin_Morroco_8

The finished home is an enchanting maze of fountains and wainscots, old stone archways and geometric tile-work, warmly-coloured rooms and spectacular coffered wood ceilings constructed on-site and painted with abstract floral designs—a grand mansion that has been given the rather fitting name, Dar Maktoub, or House of Destiny.

LACE FEELS RIGHT FOR SPRING, and while it has been traditionally used to convey modesty and purity, the Porter woman wears lace with a new sensuality. Lace gives a ladylike first impression, yet sheer finishings and provocative embroidery, along with innocent white and nude hues, reveal a new, sultry side . . .

DO YOU REMEMBER the recent feature on mother-daughter interior design firm, Kemble Interiors? Well, today, happened across the New York studo of one of the firm's designers, Heidi Bianco, who moved to Manhattan thee years ago, in search of a place in the West Village. What she found was a tiny but lovely light-filled studio on a tree-lined street . . .

{p.s} Don't you just adore the carpet? First saw it at Lake Placid Lodge a few years ago, and have been in love ever since. x

IT ALL BEGAN WITH the disco giraffes of Aynhoe Park in Oxfordshire, which lead to an Harper's Bazaar article about the work of Karen Knorr, which lead to an instagram photo of the cover of the current issue of Harper's Bazaar by Leith Clark, who styled the shoot, which lead to yesterday's first glimpses of the new ad campaign for Louis Vuitton, and before long, giraffes were everywhere . . .

{table for two | recipe : creamy pasta with prosciutto and basil}

creamy pasta with prosciutto and basil

ingredients:

400g pappardelle
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
4 cloves garlic, sliced
½ cup (125ml) single (pouring) cream
½ cup (40g) finely grated parmesan, plus extra, to serve
12 slices (180g) prosciutto
1 cup (200g) ricotta
2 cups basil leaves, plus extra, to serve
sea salt and cracked black pepper
4 eggs, poached+

instructions:

Cook the pasta in a large saucepan of salted boiling water for 7–8 minutes or until al dente. Drain, reserving 1 cup (250ml) of the cooking liquid. Set aside. Heat the oil in the saucepan over medium heat, add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Add the cream and reserved water and cook for 1 minute. Return the pasta to the pan, with the parmesan, prosciutto, ricotta and basil, sprinkle with salt and pepper and toss to combine. Divide the pasta between 4 plates, top with a poached egg, extra basil leaves and grated parmesan to serve. Serves 4.

To poach eggs, heat a few centimetres of water in a deep frying pan over low heat until just simmering. Add the vinegar and use a wooden spoon to create a whirlpool. Crack each egg into a bowl and slip into the water. Poach the eggs for 3−4 minutes, remove with a slotted spoon and drain well.

DO YOU REMEMBER Christine Dovey's Toronto home from last week—light and bright and filled with Carrara and bits of pink and gold and chandeliers? Well this week, it's the office of interior designer, Meredith Heron, who helped Christine with her home. With black walls and navy velvet and a mix of colours, patterns and textures, it is much bolder and more colourful than Christine's, and yet, with my recent and inexplicable [the winter, perhaps?] new-found love for eclectic, bright and slightly-bohemian spaces, am completely drawn to this work space, for there is still much gold and Carrara, leopard print and blue & white porcelain to keep things elegantly chic . . .

{fashion inspiration | runway: altuzarra fall 2014}

Joseph Altuzarra presented an eclectic collection featuring handwoven pieces with dangling strings, bodyhugging dresses with colourful slits and wrap coats with generous collars. At first glance, it might seem difficult to guess the main theme— that is—until one's mind settles upon the idea of contrasts . . .

. . . the contrast between the sleek and the chunky, the subtle and the strong, the traditional and the modern, between colours and materials, between the tailored and the knitted. All this has been achieved through a real sense for craftsmanship, the designer's vision of true luxury.

THE SUN HAS BEEN more golden in these past few days than in a while, hanging higher in the sky, and casting pretty shadows beneath cheekbones, and it's no wonder that we're so in love with perfect pastels lately, and these, from the Gucci show in Milan recently, are perfect in elegant pea coats and chic bomber jackets, leather ruffles and shearling and London in the sixties . . .

HAVING JUST RETURNED FROM PARIS, and shopping at Printemps Haussman, can not believe had forgotten to visit the new Vogue Café. Located in the atrium of the department store, the new pop-up café is said to have the itimate atmosphere of a private apartment. Here, there is the intermingling of Scandinavian design,& Fifties-style modernism, mid-century modern & sculptures and gold chandeliers, as well as framed Vogue Paris covers, of course. On the café menu, there are pastries and fruit juices, macarons and salads, an array of teas and club sandwiches from Hugo & Victor -- perhaps on our next visit.

THERE IS NOTHING MORE ROMANTIC than Christian Dior's perfume ad campaigns, and impossibly beautiful Natalie Portman is the face of the new Miss Dior essence, Blooming Bouquet. Tim Walker's magical photographs capture the dreamy and idyllic spirit of the fragrance perfectly, for Portman wears an exquisite haute couture gown designed by Raf Simons, surrounded by a ripple of pastel-hued flowers weaved along a sunlit staircase . . .

CURRENTLY DASHING ABOUT in Paris in black super-skinny jeans, a pair of Church's tall leather boots, a sheer blouse and a black leather & cashmere Mackage coat. Since we have been travelling quite a bit for work lately, have been looking for simple and easy outfits for busy days, and came across these shots of Leandra Medine from the Man Repeller, taken last October in Paris, before Chanel. A simple boxy white tee and nude wide legged pants & heels, and it's pure simplicity that's simply chic, light & breezy, and perfect for the transition to spring . . .
